two.
[Cough]
Friends -
welcome!
Professor Thietris allows the
tumultuous applause to continue for 30 seconds, then
raises his left paw.
I'm very pleased to be
back with you again and I look forward to beginning a
new phase of our research here in - would those of you
near the front ease forward a little please, to allow
those coming in at the back more room ... thank you -
the city.
As you can see, I have acquired a new
Neighborhood for our research establishment, based on
the "Kirel" pattern. So those little mirrors you ladies
keep in your handbags may come in useful while you get
used to your new surroundings. [Pauses for
laughter.] It seems to me that this design is the
more preferable option, having less clutter than the
"Bevin" model. There are more open spaces for exhibiting
sculptures or - as the modernists among you may prefer -
installations. The egg room is more serious than in the
other place, where the seed looks rather less like an
object of reverence and mystery, and rather more like an
Easter egg. The fountain is empty at present, though I
do have plans for cheering this up a bit. There's no
painful reminder of past Heek games, but I think the
space formerly occupied by the Heek table could be
filled by a fitting memorial to Uru Live. [Hear, hear
... good idea ... various other murmurs of
approval].
I hope that my research personnel
will be joining me in this new endeavour. Perhaps they
would like to choose rooms for their laboratories. All
we have to do is get the doors open. My own office will
be based in the classroom. It would be nice to see some
new faces too. There will be plenty of work for a
variety of volunteers: cleaners, decorators, artists,
security personnel - the list is endless.
I will
need someone to help coordinate the research effort, and
to commission artworks to beautify the Neighborhood. We
may still need outposts to continue our research in the
Ages, such as the field lab on Eder Gira, and these will
all come under the, er, umbrella of the main
establishment. With that in mind, I would like to invite
Cordelia to be my personal assistant. [A pause while
envious heads turn this way and that, seeking out
Cordelia in the crowd.]
There have been some
changes since I have been away, not least in the Great
Zero, which has been recalibrated and is now functioning
in a somewhat different manner from that preceding my
departure. I'm afraid we must respect these changes -
the thin blue line is there to help us, as well as to,
er, irritate us. Similarly, as you are aware, our KIs
have lost a certain amount of functionality. We have to
live with these limitations, unfortunately.
This
brings me to the issue of, ah, exotic equipment. A
number of unusual items have been appearing in the Ages
- things like "portals" - which have no basis in known
terrestrial science or indeed in that of the D'ni
civilization. If any of you come across such equipment
and are tempted to use it, the Institution here will
wash their hands of any involvement - in other words,
you use such equipment at your own risk. Anyone bringing
such equipment into the cavern will be banned from the
Institution. [A few seconds of uncomfortable
silence.]
But to end on a good note: It's a
new beginning - a new chapter in the exploration of the
city. I hope you will join me in helping to uncover
further mysteries as we embark on Experimental Program 1
- XP1 for short.
Are there any questions? It's
always good to have
feedbaaaaAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

Sigh.
Professor T gazes out across the empty conference
room.
Well, that'll have to do - I'm not
rehearsing it any more. But what if no one turns
up?
(it scares me that I asked when Xpack 1
would start the very minute you posted
this...)
After linking into the new neighbourhood
(do we get to name it!?) Frontmullet wandered around for
quite some time, looking at all the rooms, and of course
picking which one he wanted to take and if needed who he
would have to share with...
He eventually made
his way to the auditorium, and spent some time wondering
if he should go inside, where he would meet the infamous
Thietris, something that should never be taken lightly.
After all, the man had met Stephen Hawking.
In
the end, he walked in to the auditorium that was rather
empty, and looked down at the squirrel standing behind
the podium on the large number of phone
books..
"Umm, is this where I'm supposed to
meet?" He asked, looking rather nervous and probably in
need of a good drink..

Ah! Someone's turned up. Sidehaddock,
isn't it? I'm not too good at remembering names these
days. Well, this is all quite informal. Let me offer you
a glass of acorn mead.
The voices of man and
squirrel echoed around the rather empty
auditorium.
Stumbling into the 'hood, HannaGertie
thinks, "hey this isn't Arx, I told myself I should have
turned left at the routunda. Well, I might as well look
around if someones here." When she reaches the
auditorium, she hears Prof Thietris' and Front Mullets
echo's. She walks to them and says: "nice place you
have here! I can't stay long but I can use an acorn
mead. Normally I don't drink, but since finishing the
journey's latest part and following the Bahro Team story
I have returned to saving Arx. What will be the
purpose of this 'hood?

Welcome, HannaGertie. Yes, do have some
acorn mead. This will be the hub of our new research
program. There's, er, not an awful lot going on at the
moment, but it's early days. Perhaps you'd like to
mingle with the other - er, with backsalmon. Oh, but I
mustn't keep you from your arks (?)
*DW finally finds her way to the
auditorium* Thietris, you have no idea how long it
took me to find this place! Would you please pass out
better maps next time!? ... Oh wait... This
isn't a map of D'ni... this is Six Flags Magic
Mountain... Never mind *Hurriedly puts map
away*

Ah, DesertWalk! Yes, we are a bit out of
the way here. And now that we can't communicate using
our KIs, it does make things a bit difficult. And if I
could find the front door it would help.
Thanks for the welcome and the mead. Arx
can wait for the moment, all they say is make that sword
or attack me.
Does someone know how to put places
in the nexus? That way you can put the name of this hood
in so that everyone can come. I think the nexus is the
front door. Wonder how people got here before the
invention of the nexus or would it already be thought up
on Gartenay?
Cordelia comes running into the hood, in
somewhat of a flumux and totally out of breath
"Sorry Professor,
I was a little exhausted after the ending of the MOTBC
thread and was just enjoying a quiet drink in the
A&C Hotel. Completely forgot the time, silly me. Oh
darn it, now I've gone and left my brolly behind. Oh
well, I'm sure one of the others will bring it over for
me later".
She sorts through the piles of papers
that she has in her brief case, carefully extracting the
ones that she knows Thietris will be needing first of
all and placing them on the top of the pile.
"Oki
doki, I think I have everything you need right now,
Professor. Have you rehearsed your speech? Oh I do hope
everyone turns up - it will be such a shame if no-one
comes, especially after all the arrangements that you
have made."
Cordelia passes an uneasy eye over
the auditorium and notices the kegs of Acorn Mead stood
in the corner. Smiling to herself she is pleased to note
that Thietris got his priorities right, as
usual.
Just then she spots FrontMullet and
DesertWalk and wanders over to congratulate them both on
the amazing adventure they have all just completed
together.

Professor T is delighted to see that
Cordelia has arrived, and wonders if she will agree to
be his PA. But it's been a tiring day, and soon he is
fast asleep.
I
think the milkman here will use the nexusdelivery
system. (give the bottles an arm and hand to place on
the linking panel) ( haven't got the skills of
you all to make a picture)
Milkman sadly makes me
think of the sandman, I'm afraid I have to follow the
professors lead an turn in for the night. It's an hour
later where I come from and tomorrow comes
early. Rest me to say to all the members of team
bahro present: Great adventure! good work, keep it
coming.
*with a small backpack hooked over one
shoulder, a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt, a pair of
tennis shoes on her feet, Deladra quietly walks through
the opening of the auditorium, looking around with a
slightly puzzled look on her face*
*seeing a few
people talking and greeting each other, she looks a bit
baffled*
*speaking in a very soft
voice*
Pardon me, but is this the right place?
Some guy named Zandi, wearing a flowery beach shirt and
shorts told me this was where I was supposed to
go.
*walks in, surveying the room and it's
various occupants*
*clears throat* *clears
throat again* *coughs rather loudly*
*shrugs*
Oh, well...
Hey Professor, if you need me I'll be
wandering back and forth between the ages. I'll probally
be back here soon. I'd love to help out with the
project, I have experience at various digs, mainly
Native American villages in the South. Also worked in
the lab at university, working with samples. I'm ready
and willing for field work! Any age is fine with me!
